Seem to remember Lightning T5 XS451 being stored there for ages too! Fantastic that she is flying in South Africa as ZU-BEX.

yep she was definately there walked past the hanger one night. All the lights were on and the doors open. I was very startled to see a silver lightning tub as at the time i had never seen one with no paint Shocked

i think also that the RAFP used the Varsity for sniffer dog training....i could be wrong though

The AEF's budget on one flight per ATC cadet per annum. What surprises me about a lot of Aircadets (and quite a few instructors) is how few are really interested in flying and aviation! Why are they there in the first place?

As a very old ATC instructor, one of the biggest 'kicks' is watching how the kids faces change around a first trip. Going out - terror, coming back, huge grins - I've yet to see one kiss the grouind though..... That makes the effort worthwhile!

Im a Flight Sergeant on 308 (Colchester) Sqn ATC and a Flight Staff Cadet on 614 VGS, MDP Wethersfield and it never fails to surprise me the amount of people that attend the sqn or come gliding at the VGS that just have no interest in aviation. The trouble is many of them are pushed into it by their parents as something to get them off the streets or stop them from getting there in the first place, which annoys me highly as Cadets is not a youth club where you go purely socialising. Its a military organisation under the rules and regulations of the RAF and needs to be treated as such!!

I'll never forget we had RAF Careers do a visit at Colchester and one of the cadets was asked why they didnt want to go into the RAF and their reply was " I hate flying, its boring and makes me feel sick"

I think my head nearly exploded!!!
