Regards.

Possibly after the news from a couple of days ago, they have been grounded and just happened to be at Coningsby when it happened.

Really, i'm suprised at that as they cannot say for sure if either of the 2 aircraft had technical problems just before the horrible situation of this week.

Still flying at Wyton, info courtesy of my CO. I think im right in saying that this weeks crash was the second ever accident for the RAF Grobs, the other being an engine failure gliding into a field.

Flying the Tutors at No.5 AEF, RAF Wyton has been one of the best experiences I've ever had as a cadet, they are brilliant safe aircraft, and the pilots are some of the best most experienced pilots you'll ever come across...The last guy I flew with was a retired high ranking officer (cant remember what his actual rank was) he was a 1000+ hrs Lightning pilot and the most precise aviator I've ever met.

Gp Capt Naismith who is the officer that has been on the news throughout the recent incident stated that he had no intention of grounding the Tutors as this was a very unusual thing and as of yet there is no reason to suspect that the incident could be attributed to something that might affect the entire fleet

To be fair she's probably more at risk travelling to Cranwell on the roads than flying out of there!!

Hope she has a fabulous time - just thinking back to the Chippy days flying out of Newton and at summer camp at Waddo 1980.
For a young kid to experience flying like this is something they'll remember for the rest of their lives.
To think back when I finally did my solo glider flight at Lindholme at 16 year old rather frightens me
now I'm much older and wiser. lol!

Report back as to how she got on :D .

Cheers Paul.

Are Cadets allocated a flying allowance per year? ie 1 flight per cadet, per Sqn or are so many flights allocated to a Wing who then allocate to Sqn's?

Hope you understand the question Laughing

That's a good question.

But it mostly boils down to how many cadets are interested, who is able to take the cadets from the drill hall to the base, and which staff members at the base are available to kit up the cadets and of course which pilots are available.

Obviously those who have Sqns on base and those that are University Cadets get the best slots as they just turn up.

In my day.... If we wanted more flying hours we put our name down on the list, if there was enough names then the CO would phone up RAF Newton and have someone take us.

However to this day, I still have never had a go in Glider. No one was interested in my Sqn.

Wow Lee, RAF Newton. Did all my Chippy flying there too! And once a Bulldog. Was great flying over Nottingham and looking down on the mecca that is "The City Ground".

Seem to remember Lightning T5 XS451 being stored there for ages too! Fantastic that she is flying in South Africa as ZU-BEX.

HAPPY MEMORIES............ ☀ ☀ ☀

I want to know what happened to the 3 hunters especially the white one that where there.

Was it the Varsity that was on the dump near the railway line?

When we were testing the L98 at the shooting range. Which was fun and games for us who were left handed, I tried to go over once with a few others during a break but RAFP stopped us.

Just checked my old 'Record of Service' Logbook.
Back in 1981 at Lindholme whilst doing my Gliding Licence on my final day I had 14 flights, 7 in XN241 and 7 more in XA290.
As for Chippie flights had one a year 80,81 and 82. WZ856 x 2 at Newton, and WG469 at Waddo summer camp.

That was many years ago though - things have changed a lot since then Roll Eyes .

Cheers Paul.

The AEF's budget on one flight per ATC cadet per annum. What surprises me about a lot of Aircadets (and quite a few instructors) is how few are really interested in flying and aviation! Why are they there in the first place?

As a very old ATC instructor, one of the biggest 'kicks' is watching how the kids faces change around a first trip. Going out - terror, coming back, huge grins - I've yet to see one kiss the grouind though..... That makes the effort worthwhile!

Put them in back of fast jet. However is the policy of back seat rides still minimum of 16 years or is it 18 years now?
