I was sent an email regarding Amazon.co.uk's website and told me to go take a look at the revews written about my Hunter and Lightning books 'cause it would give me a giggle. If you're bored, I'd definitely suggest you take a look too. Spot the former FC member bearing a grudge!

Just go onto Amazon.co.uk and go to books and type Tim Mclelland, then click on to the reviews of the first and second books and read the first comment.

I think international would be stretching it a bit rj but yes, I know what you mean. Actually I'm wondering what delights will be in store for the next book, it could run and run. I can see the next "review" already...

The book is a complete waste of money... and the author smells of kippers so there!

Pheeewww i'm glad he warned us about your book, i was thinking of buying it as well.

i'm going to buy the Jaguar book with HIS photo's in instead as he seems to reccomend that one with his un-biased reviews.

i look forward to reading the books he's published.

Tim - i think you should send him a signed copy with a nice personal note.

i think his name suits him well.

Ahh Flaps, if only I could. The Lightning book ended-up the same way as every other book I've ever done - six copies sent to me gratis and a long list of contributors who deserve a free copy. So as ever, I haven't even got a copy of my own book (again!) and I'll be buying another batch from the publisher to send-out to folks. It'd be great if they sent me a huge box full that I could give away but not much hope of that - publishers just ain't that generous. Wish they were - I might have a bank account in credit instead of an overdraft!

Fair comment! I meant that maybe the FC glitterati ought to consider a specific reviews section produced by one of their team. That would be enough to warrant a free supply of books I would think!

I've just spent 25 mins reading all of the reviews DB has written.

I think he has given a fair opinion on several publications. And tbh he has given appraisal for Tim's first Vulcan book, which I think he actually regrets in a review of the later Vulcan publication.

For those who are aware of the history between Tim and DB, you can clearly see that there is a bit of a backlash, and as some of us are aware the love hate relationship between Tim and DB has been going on for sometime.

For those who have no idea, it would certainly get me comparing books, however the only time you are going to compare these books is by attending a bookshop with a well stocked miliary section (covered this subject before). Or by attending an airshow where there may be a slim chance of you finding these publications.

However I expect that some people are MORE surprised that DB has actually spent time in purchasing Tim's books, reading them and then posting the reviews.

I must admit that DB's review of the Canon Pixma MP980 Printer is very useful as I was comparing this model against an Epson. And will be looking at making a purchase of this or it's replacement in the future.

Although I see your point streethawk, was it really necessary to be so Insulting in a review of Tims book.
There are better ways to put a point across.

Would it not have been better to say "After reading this book I was disappointed with the construction and have read better material which I felt gave a better presentation, I would personally favour ...'s book"

DB is entitled to his opinion but i still think he could have presented his critism better.

Oh it doesn't bother me or the publishers at all, I just thought it was worth mentioning to FC users just for the amusement of seeing how childish folks can be! As Streehawk says, the irony is that he must have bought the damned books in order to prepare his beautifully-crafted (not) diatribes!

Damien's silly comments aside, honest criticism is a good thing as it's the only way publishers ever get any sensible feedback. So far, the only proper review I've seen of that Lightning book is by the great Denis Calvert in Combat Aircraft, and what he says is quite right really; it's a straightforward generic Lightning book (which is what it was supposed to be) let down by some rather dodgy printing quality in parts. I agree with his sentiments entirely!

I agree though that if you're buying a book, the only sensible thing to do is pick it up and look at it first. It's a very subjective business. One person's idea of a great book is another person's idea of complete rubbish, so it always depends what you want from it. I was directed to a whole page of comments about the Lightning book on a modelling site and I had to point-out that it was all very well stating that the book failed to meet this requirement or that requirement, but obviously it isn't a book for modellers, even though I tried to include as much useful material for them as I could. You can never suit everybody's tastes and the best plan is to try and steer a middle path. The more obscure and detailed subjects that get covered sometimes are generally taken-on by only small one-man publishers but you can't expect a company like Ian Allan to cater for specialised tastes - they'd go bust!

Anyway, enough already, I'm rambling again! Just think; if I'd never laughed at his "grass clipping Typhoon" claims we'd have missed all this! Laughing

Don't forget, he knows everything about everything when it comes to aviation (or so he reckons).
I remember a few choice words he has made when the FC forum was back up and running... although i can't remember the full comment, he was totally wrong of course.
