Thought it might be interesting to see the kind of photo equipment people are shooting with and why they prefer a certain brand over another.
Ive just got rid of my Canon 400d, Sigma 17-70mm and 400mm F5.6L (the lens is now in the hands of Graham Cherry) and taken the huge step to the darkside, aka Nikon!
Been lucky enough to be able to get:
Nikon D300 Nikon 300mm F4 Nikon 16-85 Nikon 1.4x Convertor Battery Grip Nikon 70-200 F2.8 (on order)
Was contemplating the D700, but then I wouldnt have been able to get the 70-200 F2.8.
My main reason for going down the Nikon route is the quality of pictures, low noise levels, great FPS and from what ive seen a better colour range.
Ive read great things about Nikon, and seen some mighty impressive results, especially from the 300mm (with and without a converter), and now I cant wait to start using my new equipment in anger, slight problem being that I cant take pics of aircraft in the UAE!
So what do you have?

Great choice on the 70-200, Dunk. You'll love it! It works great with the 1.4x teleconverter too!

I have 2x Canon 20D's and 2 x Canon 350D's Other lenses I have 10-22mm 17-85 IS 2x 18-55mm 1 on loan to my dad Nifty Fifty 50-500 which is also on loan to my dad 65-300mm 100-400 IS All the above except the Nifty Fifty is 2nd hand. Might consider in phasing out my 350D's and get a used 5D. Now phasing out my generic batteries and using Duracell ones. Using Sandisk CF cards of 4GB - 16GB respectively. I use Crumpler - Brians Hot Top and Lowepro - Magnum camera bags or if on my bike Oxford Tailpack or Tankbags. I also have a Peli Case as well which was useful when I moved house.

Nikon D50 with 70-300 DG (cheap plastic one) along with the kit 18-55mm
Would love to get a slightly better piece on the front and been thinking about the Sigma 70-300 APO to maybe get a bit of a cleaner image quality. Would like a VR lens but can't quantify the cost.

I am a Canon user for many years and have stayed with Canon with the digital SLR. I started in 2004 with the 300D and upgraded this to the 20D six months later. During the upgrade, I changed my Sigma 170-500mm lens to the Canon 100-400L. I purchased a second 20D in 2006 and the Canon 17-85mm became my second lens of choice at the same time. I know use a Canon 40D and have recently upgraded my 100-400L to the latest Sigma 120-300mm f2.8, wow, what a lens. I have "upgraded" my second 20D (due to it wearing out) to the Canon 450D and use a Canon 24-105L with it.
I now only shoot in RAW and only use manual settings for my photographs. I feel very in-control of every image I take, and thats thanks to the familiar feel of the Canon. I never look and think "if only I was using a Nikon".
I have had problems in the past with my Canon 17-85mm and my Canon 40D but I cant see me changing companies now.

Im using a Gripped 400D, EF-S 17-85 and EF 100-400L. Looking to upgrade to a 40D and Grip foy my 18th (just in time for RIAT), but dont know if the price is justified by what I would gain. Anyone used both, and how do they compare. Main thing for me being that the 40D feels much better in the hand. Ben

Hi Ben, I have a 450D and love it although it doesn't fire off enough fps for a good fast pass, thats why I only use it for static/big slow aircraft. The 40D is such an improvement, doubling the fps that I cant see you regreting it. Remember that you can only shoot 18 RAW images before hitting the buffer on the 40D but if you shoot jpeg, it's never an issue. I have a Canon grip on my 450D and it feels alot better than without it, the 40D without a grip is very comfortable.
HTH.

ONLY 18 images??? That's one of the main reasons I bought one as I found the buffer of just 6 on the 20D simply wasn't enough for the requirements of equestrian photography. The buffer's that big that I was able to buy 2x 4GB UltraII cards and save a packet rather than buy the Extreme IIIs. So, apart from the 40D which now wears the 20D's grip, I've still got the old faithful 20D, 100-400 for most things, a 70-200 2.8 for low light or horses in general and a 17-85 for other stuff.
