Is the "Quantaray" digital ?
Or is it a lens from an old SLR ?

300mm should be fine for aircraft. I would assume the 300mm is for a film SLR camera without the 1.6x crop on a DSLR, as I havnt seen any lenses where the focal length is marked taking into consideration the crop factor. Perhaps you could post some sample images of random things, let us try and gauge the zoom of the lens?

I assume by 2 x teleplus you mean a teleconverter? If so I would stop using that straight away as it will seriously effect your photo quality. When you twist the lens to zoom does the image not get any bigger?

if im honest ive never heard of a Quantaray lens, so couldnt really comment on how good the quality is. What actual camera settings do you shoot on? The image should still be alot more in focus than that no matter what lens you use

incidently ive just done a google search for you and found this:

http://www.fixya.com/support/t144120-canon_error_codes

Looks like your Quantaray may cause you some problems! If you can, your best bet would be to buy either a canon 70-300mm mkIII usm or a sigma 70-300mm APO (must be the APO version) both are ideal starter lenses while you get used to finding your way round the camera.

AV mode and set to F8.

Sorry, only just seen this Embarassed As Rich has said for jets:

AV mode, F8, iso 200, AWB (automatic white balance) or the "cloud" setting

for prop aircraft:

TV mode, 320th or 250th of a second (shutter speed) for helicopters change the speed to 160th of a second.

Hope that helps Cheers

Just practice as much as possible. Also try and keep the sun behind you, shooting in to the sun is never a good idea unless you dont have a choice. Its worth learning how to use photo editing software like photoshop. If you dont have photoshop there is a list of some good free image editors in this thread:

Finally, dont be afraid to ask for advice, we all start somewhere! Laughing
