I am heading up to the east coast on the 1st of June and will be calling in at RAF Coningsby on the way up my plan is to arrive there at around 08:00 and stay til lunch time i have had a look at the viewing guide and i am just thinking of parking in the viewing area, i do have a 500mm lense so would like to know if my plan sounds right and if it is a good place for flying shots. You cant beat a little local knowledge so any help would be great.
Thanks

The viewing area is a must, for all the gossip, from the lovely man in the buttie wagon, & also the grub available. However, unless the wind is in your direction, & it usually isnt, all you will get are shots of a/c, quite high, as they normally take off from the other end of the runway.
Your best shot is to have a look at the airfield guides on FC, they will show you the other places at CBY, & there aint that many.
I go there a lot, & I tend to go to the 25 end of the runway, thats where you will get some nice overhead shots, & with the aid of a good stepladder, some nice pics of a/c taxying from the HAS's.
Hope this helps...

To Dazza and to XT872,as for you XT872 saying that there are not many places to view from. Then get off your a*se and go look as there are plenty of places, and its one of best bases for viewing. To start off crash gate one just past main gates is good for planes within 30/40 mtrs of you,and good views of take offs and landings.Only thing here is its not good for pics as you take into sun if out.Crash gate two, again very near planes as they pass for take off.Crash gate three, one of the best places of any airfield to take shots of take off and landings,as you can walk right under them as they land if you like.Crash gate four, now the other side of field with the sun behind you.The fence is high here but you can take pics through chain link fence of take offs and landings and its away from the traffic. Then onto crash gate five, good for practice displays as they come right over your head low, but thats about all.But one of the best places to view from if they are landing from the west is the mound,go past car park and turn left at the end of field fence down a track and to an earth mound. Here you can see over the fence and get great shots of all that happens, plus again its away from traffic. So as for you XT872,take a look and dont just sit in one place and you will see that its one of the best bases to view. All you have to do is just ask someone where these crashgates are and they will tell you. Greg,

If that little golden globe in the sky plays ball then I suggest point K on the map or Crash Gate 4 as she is known, some great light to be had from this point . Ian
