DJ-X3 as per your subject - forget it...pain in the neck to program, scan speed too slow, covers HF but doesn't include SSB!, audio far too quiet, auto bandplan has numerous errors
there are some plus points (he says whilst trying desperately to think of at least two that are worth mentioning)...good battery life, compact design, works well on broadcast FM

As Dervish says its pants Bought one at duxford a few years ago and the signal strength is shocking (not in a good way) My advice avoid like the plague!

Hi, I've just discovered this site since Abingdon airshow last week and this post has worried me enough to post my first post since joining. Its my birthday this weekend and I've long wanted a scanner (though have very little knowledge about them). I have the DJX3 on my birthday list as I thought it would be fine picking up the military stuff around Oxfordshire and shows as being capable of doing so on the spec pages I have looked at, but it sounds as though I'm going to be disappointed ? Happy to put up with a slightly clunky interface but is it otherwise fundamentally flawed so much that a reasonable after market aerial etc would still mean no military coverage ? Interested in civil stuff as well but given we regularly have Merlins etc buzzing round here I really want to be able to listen to Benson, Brize etc. Of course I may not get it for my birthday - will find out in a few days, but if anyone has got it for me its too late to get it changed ! (would be from a UK website I found that seems to be reputable) Thanks
Ed

I have had a Alinco scanner, and with every scanner without direct input, it is pain to program. Once done it is easy to scan the banks/channels. I also have had the Icom R2 & Icom R5. If you are new to scanners, I think you should use a direct input (numerical keypad) type first. I have had a few scanners in my time including the yupitru 7100, and Aor 2000. Airfixpilot

Well I got the scanner for my birthday and to my (very untrained) mind it seems ok. Picking stuff up from Benson, Brize and Heathrow approach. Now how good it is compared to others is way beyond what I can comment on, I suspect not as good from others comments here. Programming without a keypad is a little clunky at first but now I have got used to it I have no problem at all. To be honest my challenges are getting round what frequencies to listen to, and what I should expect to hear on each. For instance - there are a few brize radar frequencies, currently listening to the primary ICF..... but what does that mean ? The one thing that I would have found useful is a scanner that you can assign names to the frequencies !

Primary - First (I know you know that bit!) ICF - Initial Contact Frequency

aha ! that makes sense ! Is there a step through description for complete newcomers... something like : aircraft first contacts primary ICF then handed over zone transits, talkdown etc then handed to approach then handed to ground etc etc.... probably all in the wrong order here, but hopefully you get what I mean.

There are several 'hobby' books about ATC that give guides like that though they are aimed more at the civil side of things. As there are websites devoted to just about everything there may be a site that has such a guide so a search using your favourite web-crawler would be a good start.
