Hey all,
For my early 18th Birthday present, im hopefully getting a Canon 450D with the 18-55 IS lens (standard), there is a deal on at Jessops which gives other little bits including a Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Canon AF)
At argos there is a deal which includes a Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS f/4.0-5.6 lens
My dad has a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG (Canon AF) and he gets on really well with that lens so im kinda stuck as to which one to get...
Can anyone help me and give me your opinions on which one you think is better basically
Any information would be gladly appreciated
Thanks in advance
Ant

Ant, it really depends where you shoot. If its mostly at air bases/air ports then I would go for the canon 55-250mm but you will find 250mm to short at airshows. If you go more to airshows then go for the sigma, would only really get the tamron as a last resort

I would be shooting everywhere really, i normally tag alone with my dad to mildenhall and lakenheath now and again, i also do airshow, so i basically do the all around package, so basically stay away from the tamron... can i just ask why? What makes the sigma and the canon better than the tamron?
Thanks for your help so far
Much appreciated

Is this site any use ?,I think Jessops are one of the more expensive retailers. http://www.twenga.co.uk/prices-EOS-450D-CANON-Digital-camera-398238-0 I've had my 450 for a year now and love it and use this site for spare batteries(don't get Canon's own, compatible are just as good and FAR cheaper) www.7dayshop.com

Cheers flaps, much appreciated
When i get it i'll definatly order my batteries from there, thats VERY cheap
So basically stay away from canon home brand because of price and the others are just as good?
Do you think that if i get the Sigma APO lens, i wont need the 18-55 IS Lens? If thats the case i will just get the body and then the Sigma APO lens...
Thanks again

Keep the Kit lens . they are not that bad, and will give half decent shots of static aircraft museum shot etc. The Sigma 70-300 DG macro is not a bad lens have one myself.

I've never found any difference between the compatibles and Canon's own, that goes for the 350D that I've had for 3 years and an Olympus that's 6 years old. Can't help you on lenses as I'm no expert, perhaps some of the other guys could help you there.
Ask your Dad for a 450D body for an early Christmas present as well,to save changing lenses and thus stopping dust getting in.Let us know what his reply was ! Edit.Ask for a grip as well,it really balances the camera nicely with a zoom-lens on.

If you are going to get the Sigma, MAKE SURE its the APO version. The non APO is cheaper, but the images are soft as muck and its got quite slow AF too. Ben

Big problem you have currently is the cost of lenses. If you can afford it i would go for the Canon lenses everytime. Either a 200mm lens with a convertor or a 100-400mm if you can afford one. Took me a while to get one, strtd with the 300mm canon lens i got with my old SLR film camera, then moved onto second hand 400mm Sigma lens eventually getting a 100-400mm L series by Canon which has made a huge difference to the quality of my photos. Hope you get what you want...best thing is practice, practice, practice!

Thanks for all the advice so far guys... much appreciated
Just been thinking where i would be shooting... and it would be mainly at Mildenhall and Coningsby so for that purpose which would be the best and suitable lens for shooting there from the above lenses in the first post?
Thanks in advance
Ant
P.S Flaps he's not going to go for a 2nd 450D but im still working on the battery grip

Hope you're not too confused now. I've recently just moved away from my (traditional) Nikon gear and bought the 450D from Jessops. I also got the Canon EF 75-300 f4 III USM and to date I'm very happy with handling and performance. Its very light and I always think that camera and lens were made for each other. Hope you get on OK Cheers Slip21

Hey all...
Dont worry its not another question im just posting a thank you to everybody who helped me sort out my lens dilemma... i finally decided to go with the Canon 450D double lens kit from argos which gave me the 18-55mm IS standard lens and the 55-250mm IS lens additional to it and i think i made the right decision thanks to you guys... not tested it out properly yet, hoping to get down to CBY soon to use it properly... anyway thanks again to all the advice and help i received, its very much appreciated
Thanks again
Ant

250mm should be fine for Coningsby, and will be more than enough for most stuff at Mildenhall. Enjoy, and hope to see you down the hall one day! Ben
