Ahh I didn't think to look on NWAN site, although I've lost my login info......Doh !!!!
I used to frequent Woodvale several years ago & walk along the woodland path onto the mound next to the Railway track where you describe, however I'm not aware of this new area that you mention :-
"heathland to the south which has been opened up to the public recently"
Any additional info of how to access this area would be greatly appreciated, Please PM me if you don't wish to advertise your "find".
Many Thanks,
Neg G
P.s I like the Pics, I only saw/heard them from a distance unfortunately

Hi negative g, sorry to take so long getting back to you.
The NWAN forum has restarted as a new forum so you'll have to re register if you haven't already.
The area to the south is a nature reserve now but was MoD property until recently, if you follow the road from freshfield station towards the base, opposite the train crossing is a little gate. Go through that & follow the path round & you get to the end of runway 03.
