For any kind of flying shots, the 18-55 would be seriously out of its depth. You want to be looking for a lens in the 300 to 400mm range ideally, which would cover pretty much everything from fighters to large transports. I would recommend the Canon 100-400L, but its a bit expensive! A good starter option would be the Canon 75-300 III USM, or the Sigma 70-300 APO version, both are rather good. The 300D would be fine as a body to use, but you might be able to get a 350D for pretty much the same price now. Hope this helps Ben

a bigger lens is always best but if you dont have the funds right away. then dont worry you can get a half decent picture with and 18-55 mil lens i have a few times.
these ones are the ones the the original monty was impressed with!!!! both taken with 18-55mm lens.
not as sharp as id like.

As Ben has said a Canon 70-300mm usm III or Sigma 70-300mm would be a good starter lens and fairly cheap. The 18-55mm lens is far from ideal for aircraft (in the air) and you will find your pictures suffer as a result.
If your budget allows I would go straight for either a 350d or 400d. My first DSLR camera was a 300d and while it was good I soon found it limiting. There are plenty of shops that sell second hand equipment and of course ebay.
