Hi Folks anyone been to San Javier MURCIA spotting or taking photos there lately. I am off there golfing also armed with my Bigma and wondered how it was for a possible visit to the Air force side of the Airport. Thought it might be a possibility with it being a training base for the CASAS. Any info would be much appreciated regarding photo taking or best viewing points. best regards Graeme

Graeme
As it happens I had my first visit there last Friday for a couple of hours as we were staying with relatives at Sierra Golf down the road. I am led to believe the Military use it until 3pm weekdays and then its Civvie stuff. I went down in the morning and ended up parking (see Google Earth) 37°46'2.16"N 0°49'14.37"W . You can park either side of the runway here depending on the light conditions. There is a small fence that if you stand on the kerbing you can see clearly over it - at least you dont need steps!!! Unfortunately we did have a ride round towards the Military end but could not get near it. If you find a way please let me know as I would be interested for next time. As well as the training aircraft there were a couple of Tiffies parked to one side but they were too far away for serials(these could be seen from the main Road). I'll pm you a couple of photos as I don't think I'm allowed to post photos in this section, these will give you an idea of what you can see from that vantage point.
Cheers Paul.

Hi Graeme I visited San Javier last May and had a great day. There's nothing to be seen from the civil terminal except distant views of the ramp, but following the road to the North West into town and bearing right along the perimeter wall of the base took me to the main gate where a CASA101 is on display. Back towards the airport and across the roundabout after about 1/4 mile I followed a track on the left signed 'Camping' which took me to a campsite on the edge of the sea. Good views were had standing on top of a rock just where they were turning off the runway after landing. I kept my head down when the jeep came round to have a look and didn't take any photos. You can't get any further along on the coast side of the the runway than the camp site. Between 0840 and 1400 I saw 15 CASA101s, 6 T-35s, one CASA127 glider tug, two gliders, two S-76s and one CASA212. If you're interested there is also Alcantarilla which is where the parachute training school is (CASAs and a Ju52 on the gate) and at Alicante Airport there is a AISA I-115 on display near the control tower (some sort of indigenous training aircraft) Hope this helps Dave Ferrari

Dave
Thats the same track I went down towards the campsite, looks like you had a better day than what I did . Didn't know about Alcantarilla, certainly another option for next time :) .
Cheers Paul.
