Subject: HELP!..Antenna suggestion's for my Yaesu 120d! 2009-04-27, 07:25 |

Hi....I have a Yeasu 120d hand held scanner. From home, I currently use a small mag mounted antenna which i have been happy with so far. I live in mid Suffolk (Thurston) and listen to most of the Lakenheath MATZ traffic, Mildenhall & Whattisham traffic. Whilst listening, I can clearly hear the pilot's comms but the Tower/ATC comms are almost inaudiable. My question is, can anyone suggest a new effective antenna solution for me that would improve the performance of my Yeasu. Should i consider the 'Sticky' homemade version or something else??...Would a loft mounted antenna work effectively, or should i stick something on a 10ft pole outside???? For now, i have a limited budget so would consider something cheap at first & then look for something that needs a little more wonga at a later date!
Anyone's input would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone's input would be greatly appreciated! As you say money is tight then I'd suggest the magmount raised to the apex of your loft would be a fairly cheap upgrade.
Your magmount shoved on a biscuit tin on your roof would be a cheap upgrade as long as you used coax that was suitable for the cable run.
What do you mean by a "10ft pole outside"? Three metres off the ground or three metres above your roof? The former won't do much better than what you're using now...the latter is definitely the route to take when you can afford to do it (and DON'T try to save money with cheap coax)

Thank's Dervish.....yes, i did mean a 10ft pole on the roof....any suitable antenna suggestions for this? I will try your suggestion of popping it up in the loft just to see if the reception improves. Cheers.

I will try your suggestion of popping it up in the loft just to see if the reception improves. Cheers. Numerous posts on here about aerials people use...recent ones favour the Diamond D777 (I guess because it says it's designed for airband and is widely available rather than objective testing)
