well the good thing of that, is Canon will seriously need to reconsider their pricing of the 500d

just had a quick look online Nikon d5000 = £719 Canon 500d = £869, thats a hell of a difference in price for 2 cameras of near equal specs. Shocked

The EOS 500D will be considerably cheaper once it hits the shelves, the MRSP is always unrealistically high.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool Canon user and have long envied Olympus' tilt & swivel LCD screens, and now that Nikon have jumped on the band waggon hopefully Canon will join in by the time the EOS 60D appears, by which time I may be ready to trade up from my 40D.

Surely the same applies to the MRSP of the D5000?

I'm sorry, I've been a Canon user for thirty years, I don't take much notice of Nikon prices.

No, no. My fault. I thought you were questioning graham cherry's point about the high price differential of cameras with near equal specifications based on the Canon price being the MRSP. I was merely staing that the Nikon price is also the MRSP, so the differential is likley to remain the same, thereby maintaining graham cherry's initial concerns.

If Canon's example is anything to go by, there's usually a pretty heft reduction. The MRSP of the new EOS 500D is well over £800, but I guess it'll hit the streets at around £550 and drop to £500-ish as supplies get better and the initial demand drops off.
