Wondered if anyone has had experience with these. I realise they are size limited but I rarely print bigger than 6x4 and don't have the desk space for another full sized printer Steve

I have a Canon Selphy ES-1 which has since been superseded by a later model, however in my opinion these are great little printers. I normally use it connected to my PC by the usual USB route, however I have also used direct print both with my EOS 40D and S5IS compact, both game stunning results.
The printer has a small LCD display similar to that on the back of digital cameras and it is possible to do some image manipulation tasks in-printer if you are printing direct from the camera such as cropping, rotating, sharpening etc.
This type of printer has a very small footprint and is very portable. In fact I keep mine in a small Lowepro camera bag and have taken it with me on some photo jobs, and have even run it off of a voltage inverter in the car.
One the down side, paper/ink packs aren't exactly cheap, but in comparison to getting third-rate enprints from your average D&P lab they are well worth it. As the ink and paper are packaged as a self-contained unit, there is no chance of you having paper and no ink or vice versa.
I can't speak for other makes but I'm delighted with my Canon printer.
Amazon = Canon Selphy - bought mine in an Amazon sale.
HP and Epson certainly do similar printers and i'm guessing others do too. The Canon models are compatible with all PCs and Pict-Bridge cameras.
My advice - go for it.

Many thanks for a very comprehensive reply. Currently looking at the Selphy range as you suggested and the Epson Picturemate's. Can't decide whether to go for inkjet or dyesub Steve
