can someone tell me what the deal is with shutter speeds mine is always set to auto but see phot's where back ground is blurry cos people change there speeds and i don't understand the concept of shutter speeds and how they work lol

Have a look at your camera manual. Your camera should have a shutter priority mode to allow you to adjust the shutter speeds? In that mode you select the shutter speed and the camera selects the appropriate lens aperture, etc.
Start with a shutter speed of around 1/320th (or as near as you can get) and work your way down. Have a practice on a moving object such as a car. Try different shutter speeds and see what results you get. You will also need to master panning in order to achieve the combination of a blurred background and a sharp image. It does take a bit of practice!

This is a good beginners Guide to digital photography. Its Canon based but the principles apply to all camera makes. It has a section on both Shutter and Apeture priority.
