Canon 500d!

There has been considerable speculation about this model for some time now, and oddly a pre-press release was issued last week stating 25th March as the announcement date.

I just don't see the point of the addition of the HD video at this stage as it doesn't really have a very useful capability as yet. It auto focuses before recording starts, but doesn't have continuous auto focusing during recording, hence any moving subject will not remain in focus. The same goes for the EOS 5D Mk.II

A shame, I hope Canon will correct this in subsequent models, perhaps on the 60D?

Otherwise a great spec, guessing a body only price of £5/600 at launch.

The 450D will suddenly be so "Very last year" in the eyes of the "must have the latest gear" brigade when in reality it's still a great camera. I do wish they'd leave longer intervals between up-grades, the 450D has been on the streets for barely a year now.

Yes but thats the launch RRP - the 50D was over a £1000 if I remember correctly at launch.

Really not sure why Canon are pushing up the MP on the APS-C sensors. The sweet spot for that seems to be around 12mp. I think they would be better off sticking too that and improving the high ISO performance / focus systems.

What I really hope the 60D is something like a 50D + the multi point AF system of the 1-Series. That would do me nicely!

Your right Viper on launch the 50d was around £1199 but a month later dropped to £899! Theres an interesting test done on this website:

Be surprised if they make these Digi Slr's with to many features in the video HD area.
they will be shooting themself's in the foot and loose sales from there very succesfull digi cam market.

Don't get too excited about video capabilities on current DSLRs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it this is still a very limited function, mainly because of auto focus functionality, i.e. the camera focuses when you initially start recording, but unlike camcorders, the auto focusing isn't continuous throughout the recording.
