Filters

Hi All,
Am after some help in buying a couple of Circular polarizing filters.
I know aot of people use Hoya. But found this site a just wondered
if anyone has tried or used the ones on the link below.

They are the Camlink filters on the site you buy the cp 1 and get the uv one free.

Personally I would never use a filter, as I think it degrades the quality of the image a little bit.

Normally I'd agree with that statement in the context of a skylight or the likes if they are put on just to "protect" the lens. I've had first hand bad experiances of what they can do.

However, I can agree, as in this case, with using a filter for a desired effect.

All I can say is that you normally get what you pay for. I've heard various horror stories about cheap filters so I'd say if your going to get one buy the best you can afford, Hoya Pro's seem to be OK but your atalking c. £150 for a 77mm Circular polarizing filters

i have an ultra violet filter on mine i havent looked what type of picture it would come out with out it on.
i was told off by my old man cause i didnt have it on. and that i should keep it on there for protection reasons.

fair enough people i will have ago with out it on when it comes back from nikon

Not one for the filters for protection either,
but the filter in question is for a desired effect polarisers are usefull.

Filters do degrade the image. people who keep the filter on permantly are asking for trouble.
main reason you are trapping moist air between the filter and main lens.
this air will turn stale and will degrade the image even further.
also it will grow cultures like those in a lab . many reports of lens with fungus in the optics .

use the filter when you use the lens. Digital does not see UV light like wet film used to.

I agree with everything said about UV filters and there effect on image quality but the effect seems to be very lens (and presumably) filter dependant. On my old 80-300mm the UV filter seems to make little diffrence. On the 400mm F5.6L it well and truley screws it up. THe only way to find out is to test it.

Heres the result of a test I did with the 400mm. Filter On is the BEST of 10-shots. Filter Off is worse of 10-shots, although in this case the difference was negligable. All other setting remained the same although the auto selected focus point moved between the two (centre point without the filter / centre top left with the filter)

I have allways put this issue down regarding quality from different lens and filters down to manufacturing issues.
1st the quality of the glass and batch runs.
2nd the filter threads from one filter to the other lens , again process tolerances all play a roll in
this. meaning the depth or turn of threads to distance of each filter to lens thread will be different also the end users effect of how much the filter is screwed down.
distance being a very critical part when it comes to optics,

the lens maker makes the lens to the optimised max. chucking any other varible in to it will be very it and miss. do canon make filters for the lens . or do nikon make filters for the lens . or sigma.

the answer is NO.

ask the question why.

the awnser to you question is that everything thats needed is already there made by the company Nikon/canon!

So do Nikon (Wouldn't want to fork out for one though!). Not sure about Canon.
