Hi All,

I was asked today about scanning a photograph to create a jpeg, I suppose it can be done but are the results any good and is there better ways of doing it, eg. using a private company rather than a flatbed scanner at home?

If any of you can show me a few examples I would appreciate it.

Cheers.

FRM I put some picutres of my scanned 6x4 prints from Farnborough, Finningly And Mildenhall late 80's and early 90's in the nostalgic section a while back and I was happy with the results, I can't find them now on here but I will send you some examples.

Best way i have found of doing old prints , is to take a picture of the picture with my DSLR,
the set up can be tricky and you have to experiment with the location of the picture and the light set up.

A tripod is a must , the end results can be very very good and you have a good work base to then photoshop . also if taken well you can take a small print and you have a image inside your DSLR at the size and res of your Camera.

Well worth a try nothing ventured nothing gained.
cheers Rich. :study:

Scanning a photo and saving it as a JPEG is just the same as scanning and saving in any other format. You scan the image - slide/print - and have the image on your screen in your TWAIN interface operated via Photoshop or other imaging package, or as a stand alone scanning applet - the only difference is what image format you save as - TIFF, JPEG, BMP etc.

The only Caveat in saving to JPEG is that as this is a compressed format, there is a degree of loss, but this is controlled by the degree of compression (1 to 12) set at the time you save.

Yes I've done a bit of that with some of my old 35mm shots. My HP Printer / Scanner scans direct to JPEG. I then took them and quickly put them though Canon's DPP to add a bit of sharpening and to clean up a bit of dust but thats it.

Results are on this flickr link 35mm Scans

Basically the better the quality / condition of your picture the better its going to scan
