I have a 16 month old Canon 40D that has given Error 99 today (Taken 7800 shots). I have tried 4 different lenses, different batteries cards etc, I have cleaned contacts but to no avail. I have logged it with Canon UK and await a reply, anyone on here got a similar experience? Andy

It appears like you have done all that you can here.I have just looked for you on the sites i use and they all say and repeat what you have done.
I use Nikon myself. My recent problem came down to a shutter failure.
Check your Warranty
Sorry i cannot help further.
Jim.

What's "firmware" ,do you mean the installation discs ? The firmware is the software "built in" inside the camera, to be honest im not convinced reinstalling the firmware will make a difference in this case. Would wait and see what Canon say.

There is known fault with the 40D. Sometimes it can be rectified by the following. Copying the firmware from the canon site onto your CF card via a USB card reader and then updating it via the camera. Removing the lens and then getting a pencil rubber and cleaning the contacts. I know of two 40D's that packed up 24 hours apart from each other last year. 1 was resolved by both the firmware and cleaning of the contacts. The 2nd had to be returned under warranty.

No battery grip used and I have clean contacts etc with no joy. Obviously at 16 months I am out of warranty, but Canon have asked me to send it back for inspection/repair. I am hoping they are going to do the right thing and sort it as 16 months and 8,000 photos is not impressive. Andy

Just because it is out of warrenty does not mean you have to pay for the repair, as long as you havnt abused it or used it exccesivly and by the sounds of it you havnt return saying it is not fit for purpose - The only thing is I'm not sure who you should say that to, canon or the retailer. I've found Canon UK to be pretty reasonable in situations like this; you'll probably be okay.

Thanks for the replies. Thank you for contacting Canon.
As regards your inquiry concerning the liability. In case you still have warranty, depending on the source of the error, Canon will repair the camera free of charge. In case you do not have warranty, you would unfortunately have to bear the cost of the repair yourself. The RCC will ultimately determine what the problem is and on the basis of that inform you as to whether you will be charged and what the extent of the repair cost will be.
This was the e-mail response I got, I am sending the camera to Canon UK and getting the fault diagnosed (and repair quoted) I will take it from there. Andy

Should be a free repair to be honest. they sprout out the facts and figures of 50,000 shutter cycles , and you have them going back with less then 10,000, that to me is a quality issue with Canon.

The 40D is around £600 why would he buy a new body if its £169 to repair? BTW it's spelt well :)

{censored}! that is about 40% the cost of a new 40D body. Was that from a Canon service centre? If so it might be worth contacting Canon UK direct and seeing what they have to say about it. Canon quote a mean time between failure of the 40D shutter at 100,000 cycles - that is a mean but sub-8k would suggest a manufactoring fault.

Oh if that were true! At £422.50 I'd have bought one by now... But on the more serious matter, I'd talk to the Elstree service centre direct rather than one of their authorised centres. The only thing going against you is that the warranty on these bodies is 1 year (which Canon may stick by) but as it's only used up less than 8% of its quoted 'shutter life' you hopefully have more than a leg to stand on. They were good to me when I sent my 20D in to have the AF calibrated against my (then) new 100-400 & 17-85 as the body itself was 14 months old.
