Noted on another Forum that Nimrod XV232, has veered of the runway just after landing at Kinloss.
No one injured but the Undercarriage is knackered.

Surely your thread title is somewhat sensationalist and exactly the sort of thing that gets the gutter press banging the anti-Nimrod drum again.

If what you say is correct, this is a relatively minor landing accident and hopefully not something the press will get hold of with luck. Perhaps a little discretion might have been wise?

Such incidents are not going to remain outside the public domain. All such incidents and accidents are available via outlets such as the National Audit Office, Freedom of Information Act, Parliamentary Questions, etc. There is also the families of the deceased on XV230 who collate and publicise all incidents involving Nimrod airframes.

Already posted on PPRuNe. No doubt the press will be all over it in a matter of hours.

I didn't say it wasn't going to reach the public domain - it already has, what I said was the less that reached it the better. The post on PPrune is as badly worded as the initial post here, and is just the sort of thing the gutter press loves.

At a time like this when our armed forces have their backs to the wall, they need all the support they can get, this sort of thing does them no favours at all.

I apologies if this upsets some of our members, but this sort of rumour mongering really annoys me. Wait until there is something more concrete before posting if you feel the need. In days gone by this sort of thing went un-noticed, but there are times when modern communication is not a good thing.

Highland Sniper,
It wouldn't make any difference even if it was an official MoD press release that was posted. The minute the press see 'Nimrod' they are going to spin it and go on the anti-Nimrod bash. Frustraiting, yes, but it is simply the nature of the beast in this age of instant communication. No amount of forum sanitisation is going to prevent the press reporting it in a sensationalist manner.

Teej, you misunderstand me. I'm not talking about forum sanitisation, but about the blatant rumourmongering which is flying around the net on this subject. Of course the press - especially the tabloids - are going to make a meal of this on the "Nimrod is unsafe" angle, but half-baked "I saw this on another forum" posts don't help.

Highland Sniper,
Apologies for misunderstanding. I agree it is frustraiting, but it is always going to be the case. I believe that Fighter Control can't simply be linked to. You have to be registered to view. Journalists are going to use such outlets as PPRuNe for their info. As you can see on PPRuNe it is already developing into a bit of a bun fight which the lurking journalists thrive on.

Colin,
Thanks for posting the info.

Teej, apologies accepted. My initial concern was the nature of the post but also a pointless campaign to keep the gutter press away from this and other similar incidents. I haven't seen any mention of this in the media, but I suppose some over-zealous leftie journo will manage to do a 2+2=5 story from it. The coverage on Pprune is very sad, that forum has gone badly down hill to the extent the the thread on this incident is IMO pretty pointless.

I had forgotten that FC was in effect a closed forum, that is at least some comfort.

All in all, a lesson needs to be learnt from this, and I think that was established in the first few posts.

Just to say that I've sat and watched the replies from my initial post and yes i have also searched the web for confirmation that this happened, I have no reason to doubt the source that I obtained it from. It wasn't meant in any way to be sensationalistic all I can say is that in my eye's if an aircraft lands and then departs the runway and ends up with it's undercarriage broken to put it politely then in my eye's that is a crash, hence the title Nimrod crash. It is good to see that at least we can debate these things without it getting out of hand and members falling out with each other. Now all I need to know is how long the hogs are going to be at Leeming. :?:

I can confirm that this has happened,on friday evening. I'm at Kinloss everyweekend (Air Training Corps-VGS)..

The airfield has been closed, today and tomorrow (sunday) whilst they are removing the Aircraft from where she dug herself in.

Apparently it was a gust that caught the pilot out, she then veered off the runway (only slightly- It looks as if it could jsut be taxied off, but she's in too deep)

Noone was hurt during this incident...

I have seen it, but took no pictures, I don't want no SnowDrops landing on my doorstep!

Gents I have removed a link to photos of this incident as it has been decided by the moderating team it would be for the best. They could quite easily cost someone there job and I would ask that the link isnt posted again.

regards,

Graham

FOr those who read my last post, it wasnt the Wind that caught out the pilot.. burst tyres were the culprit!

A specialist team from SouthWales came up and ran the recovery.. with what looks like no real damage to the gear at all!

(they dont make em like they used to!)

The suppression of this story is the RAF's problem. Anyone breaking their rules knows what the consequences are so why should we be worrying for them?

Because it impacts the 99.9% of service personnel/civilians who actually abide by the rules laid down at the bases where they work. Its people like this (the poster of the pics) that get photography rights withdrawn for the sensible!

We went through a whole load of nause not so long ago to keep the abiity to take photographs on base (this includes visits by you, the enthusiast), and even got the wording rewritten - alot of thanks to Andy (Ranger on UKAR) for his work on this.

Ive got pictures of the Typhoon wings from the crashed aircraft from China Lake, all burnt and nice and crispy - I cant post em, or give them to the mags - because I would get hunted down and end up in the pooh, and it would impact others such as Jonesy at Brize.

I hope this posting will not be too contentious. The serial was XV232

I take your comments on board but it does not change the fact that someone HAS posted pictures of the incident on the internet. Self censorship is one thing but self denial is another.

The story is out in the public domain

Fair enough Wallace, were not denying the story exists, but the pictures in that Vectra forum were obviously not authorised for release from the RAF/Crown.

No problem with links to official news sources or pictures approved for release shot on base either.

I think the main thing is the incident ended up being a minor 'off' and they all walked away.

Thanks for the links to the Scottish news sources, hadnt seen those.
