Aileron im not sure there is a way to stop the buffer filling up. All cameras have a set buffer capacity, the trick is to practice so you minimize the number of shots you take.

Don't know if you know but you can help speed up the buffer clearance slightly by having a faster write speed card, such as a sandisk ultra II (66x write speed) or extreme III (133x write speed). If you already have a high speed card take Grahams advice.

Agree with what Reaper 493 said, what CF Card do you have? i used a standard Sandisk card on my dads 40D and it locked up after 11 shots but swapped it with my Sandisk IV and got bored after 40 shots where it didnt lock up so sounds like you have got a slower transfer rate CF card.

Play.com have extreme IV's of various capacities at bargin prices.

Also the Duracell BP-511's last longer than the original canon ones and cheaper as well.

Shooting raw will soon fill your buffer , normal jpegs should let your Nikon run more than 11 shots .
certain ive read that you should be able to keep shooting a burst till the card flls up when set on normal jpegs. as been said above 66x or even 133x right speed cards should help.
