With Severe Weather and Thunderstorms being my second hobby i was in my element when i visited Italy last week. We had 5 days out of 7 with thunderstorms.
Here are just some of the lightning shots. I missed over 70 strikes whilst sheltering from the torrential downpours and trying not to get hit.
These are all single strikes but with multiple branches. Took hundreds of lightning shots.
Hope you like them.

Would have loved to catch several strikes in the same frame (which is easy when doing long exposures) but by the time i had set up and the rain buggered off, it was only striking once every minute.... I had the camera set to either 10 secs or 20-30secs exposure) so each strike, although multiples is a single 'strike'. The ghosting you see around the trees is the ghosting from the trees moving in the wind and the long exposure doing its tricks.
Really photogenic lightning and the branches of the main lightning went in all shapes and wiggles... doing loops and such everywhere.

Very impressive shots. I have tried many times to photograph lightning without any luck. Well done. Dave.

Was at one of the Italian Lakes about 3 Weeks ago and there was one almighty Thunderstorm at Night and I would say it was totally amazing.

Joe, Have had a couple of close calls but it gives me more respect to lightning. One such close call was that i had a leader go from my umbrella but luckily the leader from a football pitch flood light accepted the downward stroke rather than my umbrella. Enough bang and flash for cars to stop to see if i was okay though. Ears were ringing for hours. The feeling you get is something you never experience before so you know its coming. I had all my hairs stand on end including my hair on my head together with a distinct popping sound in my ears and a ringing noise (not the ringing after the bang). Once i felt these symptoms i just cowered and expected to be hit. The lightning struck beside me to my right and the ground around the light post peeled upwards. I had a conversation with a lightning expert about it some time ago and he said what i felt was a leader stream coming off of me (my umbrella) waiting for the downward stroke to meet it but luckily the light post, being taller got it before i did. Second time, we were in a car when we got zapped along with many others. The car infront got the full whack and it streamed from his car to ours and three others. His horn came on and wouldnt turn off and our wipers stopped working.
My secondary hobby is storms like i said so i enjoy taking photos of lightning when i get the chance and amateur forecasting the storms is something i enjoy too.
It's mad that those lightning strikes are only an inch wide and hotter than the sun... very powerful.

Lovely shots, I do find lightning interesting; never really understood why it zig zags across the sky and not just a simple straight line to the nearest "earth"

Hello That was very luck if didnt earth on you. Still shocks me the risk that storm chasers take! We went on holiday to florida a few years ago and the thunderstorms are amazing there. Not olny the lightening but the rainfall is enough, we watched a lake rise by about a 2 foot in about 10 mins. Hopfully it stays there we dont want any here. Joe
