Hi All There are 8 of us going for a weekend of seal watching over the 21st & 22nd November but we are planning on going to Coningsby on the Monday 23rd. So as novice visitors to this base and using the "viewers guide" what is/are the best locations for viewing the action? I surmise we may not stay for more than the morning (work the next day with a 4 hour drive home & 6am starts on the previous Sat & Sun!) so any advice & pointers would be very welcome. TIA

The Mound is a great view (As long as it's all still there!!) it's just past the car park on the left hand side of Dog Dyke road, and Crash gate 4 is good for take offs / landings depending on the direction they are taking off from.

Don't take offence to this, but in the "old" days (Pre t'interweb) we went for days-out to various bases and found the best viewing-spots within a few minutes by just sussing-out which way the wind was blowing and driving around a bit to find a sensible place to park-up.
This involved many bases that just don't exist anymore like Sculthorpe,Finningley,Alconbury,Woodbridge,Bentwaters,Church Fenton,Upper Heyford,Honington,Coltishall etc.,just to name a few, plus the few that still exist !
We didn't even have mobile-phones in those days,so if we found 5 B52's at Marham then we had to find a phone-box,queue-up,find the right change etc. to alert everyone else.
We really don't know how lucky we are these days,we just have to turn the PC on to find out virtually everything that's moved that day in the whole of the UK.
We even have "spotting-guides" that show all of the best places to go to at every major base, what's it going to be like in 20 years time folks ?
Well ?

@ Flaps ~ good points well taken the "world wide wait" has made such a big differnce in many things Does anyone know if when visiting the BBMF you are allowed to get inside the Lancaster My father was a POW and repatriated back from Germany in one and it would be good to "see & feel" what he experienced if only on the ground?

You can't get in the Lancaster sorry. For a (Large) fee you can sit in and have a taxi run in "Just Jane" at East Kirkby , which isn't that far away. Not sure whether they are still on, they used to be Wednesdays and Saturdays in 'the season'
