I photographed this at Leuchars yesterday. It carries a 40th anniversary colour scheme.

Blimey, they haven't exactly pushed the boat out have they? To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Tonka and thats the best colour scheme they can come up with? What a load of carp (or should I say minimalist?) MarkL

there is LITTLE effort for the painters these days, as these logos are now all just transfers. The design would have been emailed to Leuchars paintshop, and they just PRINT the design, and stick it on. The only painting they did, was the fresh grey on the Fin

When you compare this to the splendid colour schemes that have been applied to the Hawks at Valley over the years, or the Tucanos at Linton. Indeed look at the schemes that adorn the various Tonkas at Marham, "Shiney Two" for example, and someone can't use their imagination and a bit of paint here and there? Sheer laziness!

I suspect that was aimed at the penpushers higher up that sign the forms to okay such things rather than our boys n girls in blue that actually get on with the job. RAF painters can do just as well at addorning an aircraft in glorious schemes, just never allowed to! Ray

Jesus some of you out there should listen to yourselves. Bitching away like a bunch of old women. Just be grateful that a jet got painted at all! The forces are cashed strapped (like everyone else these days) and currently in action and all you do is moan that the RAF haven't pushed the boat out.
Well so what if it isn't the most awe inspiring colour scheme in the world or been applied by airbrush, get a life...

The cost of a coat of paint or a sticker or 2 is tiny, so to say its because the Forces are cash strapped and are on operations is just plain wrong.
Germans, Dutch, Belgians, French are all deployed on operations, all have budget constraints, all produce excellent painted aircraft year after year.
This is just a poor effort IMHO.

This isn't even a Squadron effort folks - it's to commemorate 40 years of Panavia and Turbo Union, not the Tornado.
You can hardly compare markings to commemorate something like this with Squadron anniversaries and such like so I really don't think any criticism of our Squadrons is fair or relevant.

Not having a pop at the Squadrons at all, as ever its those higher up the food chain that run the fun police that are the problem.

I thought it was The Tornado was introduced to Service to the RAF/GAF in 1979 which makes 40yrs.

It didn't get painted, just a zap on the fin (and a crappy one at that!). All we're asking is for an extra lick of paint here and there with a bit of imagination to brighten up what is otherwise another plain jane boring colour scheme. As Panther 494 quoted "there is no more esprit de corps"

The cost of painting a tail bearing in mind most of the money comes from the Sqn funds is in a region of £6000, so its not a huge price but i know better things you can do with £6000 out of Sqn funds.
