5/10/09 - 23/10/09 Exercise JOINT WARRIOR 09-2
Exercise JOINT WARRIOR 09-2 is the second exercise this year in the JOINT WARRIOR exercise programme. This programme provides a major training opportunity for UK, NATO and Coalition forces by offering a realistic scenario that enables integrated training for land, sea and air forces. The exercise will be predominantly located in northern England and Scotland. Up to 20 surface and 4 sub-surface vessels will operate in the Northwest Approaches and around the Western Isles. Air activity will include maritime and land attack together with air defence operations. Up to 40 aircraft will participate in tactical packages supported by air refueling and airborne command and control. In addition, there will be considerable maritime air activity by both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. Participating fast-jet aircraft will include Harrier GR9 embarked on HMS Illustrious, Tornado GR4, Typhoon and Hawk. Maritime patrol aircraft from Canada, France, Germany, Norway, UK and the US will also participate together with helicopters from Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Portugal, UK and the US. Exercise flying will mostly take place on weekdays, between 1000-1230hrs and 1400-1730hrs. A small amount of night flying will take place in the second week of the exercise, there may be limited rotary-wing flying at the weekend.

Sorry to dissapoint you but Cowden closed down many years ago. The majority of the action will take place in NW Scotland in particular at Cape Wrath Range.

Thank you for the reply. I never knew that. I have never been there specificaly to watch aircraft but when I am in the area, Witherensea, Hornsea, I quite often see aircraft low down. Some A 10`s popped up over a hill while driving into Hornsea once. Trully awesome ! I guess the Typhoons high up over the sea are on their way ou to the BAE range off Lincs ? Is it true there is an air to air refueling area off Flamborough ? Sorry for all the questions. I am new here Cheers Ben

HMS PENZANCE HMS NORTHUMBERLAND HMS ILLUSTRIOUS HMS PORTLAND TCG ORUCREIS HMS TRAFALGAR BNS DEFENSORA FS STYX FS EMERAUDE
The United States Navy is sending four ships, as is Canada, and there will be other ships from Denmark, France, Turkey and - as something of a rarity - the Brazilian frigate BNS Defensora.
Four submarines will take part - one from the UK, two from Norway and one from France.
In the air will be helicopters from the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, the USA and Denmark, while planes will fly from the UK, Germany, France, Canada, Norway and the USA.
All subject to change.
Got a 3flight on Ark Royal last year just off Greenock.

Ben Again, welcome to the Forum there are a number of Ranges on the East Coast the principle ones are Donna Nook near to Mablethorpe Wainfleet near to Skegness and Holbeach on the Wash. To get an insight on these Ranges just click on Ranges and the relevant Range hope this helps. PS I once saw Vulcans and F111s at Cowden in the 1970s.

Loch Ewe is always one of the best places to view these exercises. With amphibious assaults, air attacks, FAC, chance to see vessels close to the shore, it's usually (or was previously in many) one of the better places, other than Garvie Island

We have had Navy Lynx over East Yorkshire the last few days. Very unusual. Is this in any way linked to the exercise? Ben

It's still showing as Oct Not only that - our local Press have waxed lyrical about the big event to come - so it hasn't "been" yet! Still due.

The dates are 5th-23rd October,I've heard that the Brazilian ship is already moored off Faslane (Clyde) and has N-4006 (Lynx) sat on the heli-deck,the serial is unconfirmed as yet. Expect support and participants to arrive at Kinloss from Friday onwards.

Three Marines Sea Kings just passed over Howden. With these and the Navy Lynx that have been around I am guessing we have a ship off the coast.
