When the Gas Rigs first appeared in the Irish Sea off the Lancashire coast, a certain Warton Test Pilot who was renowned for doing interesting stunts went out into Morcambe Bay and circled one of the rigs on full reheat a number of times, The Supervisor on the rig contacted Warton ATC, asking if the pilot of the Lightning could go elsewhere as it was shaking the rig structure and even more importantly all the night shift were awakened from their slumbers. The same Pilot went to Barrow in Furness the home of Vickers, "The Ship Builders" as he flew up the estuary he buzzed a Submarine which was entering port with the crew all lined up on the deck next to the conning tower it was alleged that he flew as low as the conning tower and the ships company were spreadeagled on the deck. The Lightning was going so fast that there was no clear identification as to where it was based but it was suspected as coming from Warton.
