Sorry, I'm not a "gentleman" .....but I too vote for the B52, along with SR71 and A10's over your options.

Sheff, what are we talking here? A "History of", the "Service life of", the "Design and Development of" or all roled into one?

I know there are many books on each aircraft you have listed but I must admit a passion for the Canberra. Good luck and keep us all posted. ;)

Probably a combination of stuff, a comprehensive coverage.

I know what you guys mean about other subjects but it's within the above list that I'm interested in seeking opionions. Cheers!

They are all interesting ac in their own right, but personally I would go for something that has now finished its main active life such as the Canberra or something with lots of users and lots of mks like the Hawk... but then again, the Bucc is a great ac. I would stay away from Typhoon as much of it is still classified.

I get the feeling that Harrier wouldn't excite most folks all that much?

This is a tough one, as so far all the aircraft and even motorbike HB books appear on Amazon, Waterstones and Blackwells websites for a few weeks at special offers.

Then 6 months later the same ones appear in the Works for less that £5. I have had a few books that are supposedly £30 - £50 RRP but have a Works price of £4.99.

The military section at the Waterstones and Blackwells here in Nottm are virtually on one shelf now. Military History and Reference is not a subject that people read now.

Alot of the books I see now are merely reprints of other books under different titles. 9 times out of 10 you see the same pictures. I went to the Ian Allen bookshop in Brum before Xmas for some ideas of what to get dad for Xmas, he used to be a member of the Military Book Club and it has been a good 20 years since he last got a book from there.

I had a look at the books, and for £18 there was a few books with a few black and white photos, a couple of full page images and mostly text which was in a large font.

It certainly wasn't worth the price it was being sold at. So I got him a special edition Town Like Alice DVD.

Books need to appeal to all ages. I would take ideas from the fortnightly Airplane and Aircraft that we had in the 80's and early 90's, (Remember them !!!) and have pull out sections showing the aircraft in detail.

I would have lists of all the variants for each country by serial and also include the surviving ones, and pictures of them now.

I would also have an interactive DVD included in the book, with interviews with the crew, the people that built the aircraft, perhaps include some actual film footage and a selection of photos.

I had a look at the "Aviation" section in Waterstone's,Inverness this week(which is a biggish store).
They had 2 books,1 was a pictorial history of Concorde, the other was an Airlines Livery Recognition book,10 years ago they would have had 70/80 different books.
Long live Amazon !

Harrier, Tornado and Hawk have been done by various publishers, including RAFBF, which even had prod. lists in them (albeit a while back).

I'd go for Buccaneer or Canberra myself.

Oh, and SR-71, of course!

I had already got a distinct impression that Canberra might well be the most popular option from the list I mentioned, and the above comments seem to confirm this.

I assume that nobody is desperately thrilled by Harrier as a potential subject?

The Harrier has a very interesting history and has had some real active service, I personally can't see it being as interesting a read as the Canberra though... but ulimately you have to write about what interests you and a well written book will always interest...

i'd go for the Harrier and Canberra. The Harrier because I think from the design to the present day would be a good book and the Canberra because I think it's a good looking aircraft and I don't know alot about it.

Just to say thanks for the feedback - haven't forgotten about all your comments. Unfortunately things have moved-on slightly thanks to the current economic crisis and this has had quite an effect on the type of book (and subject matter) that the publishers (at leat the ones I deal with) are willing to look at! But books are still being produced so I guess that's a relief!

Breaking off from the vacation for a few moments, lovely to see the Reds over Edinburgh this afternoon.

If I were to choose 3 from your list it would definately have to be Tornado, Typhoon and Hawk.

Cheers for that - no decisions as yet but I think we should be able to drag at least one if not two subjects out of the list to actually get published! The Lightning book will be out in about a month's time.

Another update on the above. Things have taken a downturn thanks to the economic crisis and I don't think there's likely to be any follow-on book after the Lightning now, at least not for some considerable time. Pity really, as the Lightning book has been very well-received but there you go - such is life! Other unrelated ideas are in the pipeline though so the book publishing world isn't dead completely!

A new book on the TSR2 should be out next spring.
