Seems a good line up. Has anybody ever visited the show before. Where would be best viewing locations, on the sea front, on the beach, on top of cliffs ? Also assuming that most aircraft will opperate from Bournmouth airport is there a static display ? Before the museum closed / moved there was a viewing area, what is available now ?

It depends whether photgraphy is important to you and then somewhat on the length of your lens:
1. The cliff top has the advantage of height, putting you at eye-level with some of the aircraft and the sea makes a great, different backdrop, however it's that bit further from the display line; so assuming an APS-C format camera, you'd really need a minimum of a 400mm lens (last year I was on the cliff-top using a 150-500mm and at 500mm didn't quite manage to fill the frame with, for example, the Lancaster on its closest passes.
2. Sea-front/promenade or beach - IMO, if you're going down below the cliffs, you'd be best off on the beach - either way, you've lost the advantage of height; so you may as well get that bit closer on the beach.
3. As an alternative, for a different viewpoint, you could try one of the piers (the main display line is between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers), Bourenmouth pier would be the better choice as it's to the west and would mostly avoid the problem that the cliffs/sea-front have of shooting into the sun, although I haven't tried it; so I don't know how crowded it gets - it might be packed solid.

No ... although some of the participating aircraft use the airport, it's not part of the festival/display.

There has been some talk of a new, dedicated viewing area at the airport, however I don't know if it will be completed or available by 20th August and I can't find any mention of it anywhere, despite extensive 'googling' ...... perhaps someone 'in the know' could shed some light?

Well i normally arrive at Bournemouth around nine so it gives you time to look around a pick a place to view the airshow from.
last year i watched from the cliffs as your at the same hight as the displaying aircraft so the displays look better.
I hope that helps but ive only been to Bournemouth once and that was last year for the air festival so my knowledge is limited.

HTH Terry The airport now has a viewing area: £4 per car each time you enter (it's a machine), £5.50 if you use a card. It's pretty basic - portaloos and a picnic area but not much else and the fence is high, so not good for photography unless you have steps. However, it is right by the end of runway 26 and opposite the Cobham pan where some airshow stuff will park so if spotting's your thing, it's fine. To access the viewing area, turn into where the terminal is and follow the signs.
On the other hand, for £3 per person, why not support the Bournemouth Aviation Museum and visit there? The museum has a 'viewing bus' and from the top floor you can see across the airfield. You'll need a long lens (400mm plus) to get decent shots from there but of course the museum also has static exhibits, toilets, under cover viewing and refreshments (but not a cafe). The museum is accessed from the Adventure Wonderland Park on the South side of the road past the airport. Opening times here are normally 10 to 4pm but the museum has a number of enthusiaists (spotters) who are also involved in running it so you might get lucky and be able to stay longer.
You pays your money and you takes your choice ...

thanks james Easiest way is to follow the signs to the Park & Ride (£10 per car per day) and then take the shuttle bus (at no more cost) from there.
If the wind's up and you're taking photos, head to the top of the cliffs but you may miss some low flypasts. The display is between Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers so anywhere between them gets a decent view.

I wasn't at the seafront on sunday but do know that the Reds scrubbed halfway through their display, does anyone know why? Was there low cloud/fog at the seafront? I heard chatter on the radio regarding a boat, and wondered whether a high masted vessel had strayed into the danger zone.

It was due to low cloud, Rolled in about 4.15!! Sods law huh. Still the Vulcan Typhoon and Arrows tried to put on a show. Credit to all the aircrew for their efforts. Leader made the right call though, visibility was getting dire under the cloud too. Rich
