Hi Lincs,

so many variables, so you need to be a bit more specific to get help.

What lens?

What lighting?

What type of portraits are you doing? (Head, 1/4, 1/2 or full body)

What style?

Hi Lincs,

to try and be as flattering as possible either only use a gentle fill in flash, as full flash can bleach out the subject matter and give a harsh effect (this can be fine if you want it but not if you don't) or just use natural light, aided by reflectors.

Go for the larger lens (if you have the space) but keep your aperture to F5.6, which will aid in your focus but should blur the background (given a reasonable distance).

Make sure the model is comfy and chilled out, play a bit of background music, to put them at ease and ensure you do test shots with a pillow (wearing a shirt, to get some practise, as there's nothing worse for a subject waiting for a 'tog to set up the kit.)

Get some kitchen foil to act as reflectors, in stead of proper reflectors. Even a sun screen from a car can make a good reflector.

Have a laugh and enjoy yourself.

Don't forget to set your light balance to an appropriate setting.

Keep your background as simple as possible, make the poses natural and ensure the subject has something to learn against or sit on etc.

Let us know how you get on.

As for settings, I always use manual for everything and would suggest you do the same for such work.
