For military personnel away from home comp(assionate) cases are categorised in 3 levels.
Comp A - relative (parent, wife or child) not expected to live or death of wife or child. Comp B - relative (parent) has died - returning for the funeral / help with affairs / support Comp C - basically a priority indulgengee - death of grand parent
For the Comp A aircraft will be held/diverted (ie heaven and earth will be omved to get the person in question where they need to be). In the passed I have cancelled a take off clearance to get someone on board a VC 10.
There was a recent thread on PPrune (www.pprune.org) which explained the system - sorry can't find the thread at the moment.

This is one thing the military does very well, and I have done several flights for Comp A's... even been turned back to Akrotiri, dumped fuel and landed to pick someone up... long may this service continue!!!! Tonks 8)

S Had to cancel a take off clearance last month on a VC10 going to Akrotiri, some urgent medical stores that were needed furhter down route had turned up, but would have to be thrown in the bin if they wernt transported on that flight.
The RAF certainly look after forces on compassionate A cases, not unusual to have a BAE146 waiting to whisk them onwards from Brize.

Yeah it's something they do very well. I know of a guy who lost a relative while on summer camp, he got a ride in a Bucanneer to the base nearest his home.

As tonks has said the system works well, luckily i never had to use it , i was at home when i father was in a serious bus crash in 82, another story, i did hear of an airman in singapore who was compat 1, nothing was spared, fast jet to fast jet and he was home in time to say farewell
