Hi all, I am thinking of replacing my old AOR 1000 Scanner and i am torn between the Icom IC-R5 and the Uniden UBC 3500XLT. If anyone has any thought's on which would be the better buy, I'd like to here them. As i've said i cannot make up my mind which i'd like the most, so any view's would be most welcome. Thankyou for taking the time to read this. Skeggy.

Hi Skeggy, Well ive the icom ic -r5 and my brother has the 3500xlt,both are very good scanners, both capable of recieving all civil and millitary aircraft, what i like about the icom is that it uses 2x AA batteries which if going out for the day you can easily replace quickly to get you going again, the icom is a bit difficult to program and the user manual isnt great. i would suggest using a watson w881 high gainer aerial on both scanners as it really does improve the reception. Oh yes,and the icom and uniden both have alpha tagging, but the icom is limited to only 6 letters, which isnt a problem but you have to abbreviate more. Maybe look at Ebay or around the net,as you can get a bargain at the moment,so to sum it up both are good scanners. Hope this helps Chris.

Thank's for the reply Chris, And thank's for the info about the aerial. I was/am leaning towards the Icom, Purely for the size, But we will see. Thank's again. Skeggy.

Not sure what the icom programming is like but bctool makes programming the uniden an absolute breeze. Great piece of software and it is free which helps too! I have a 3500 and have to say I am very happy with it so far. Very easy to get to grips with and a good performer also.

Thank's Ringo747, Yes i've looked at the Bctools programme,It does look like it could be a God send instead of inputting frequencies one by one . Think i'll have to go and have a play with them both to get a feel (so to speak) for them. Again thank's for your Input. Cheer's Skeggy.

Used to have an R5 and it was a very capable scanner. Own a 3500 now and love it to pieces. It it much easier to program by hand than the R5 is (as the R5 does not have a keypad).

Hi Sorry for late reply. If you decide to go the uniden 3500xlt way,[Ive got one and its great].I would recomend you take a look at 2 sites dedicated to the radio, because they have pre programed lists you can down load, look at on bctool then load or not on your radio. I dont know the web adreses but if you put Uniden 3500xlt in your search engine Im sure you will find them ok. mike.p

I have an IC-r5, an excellent little radio, does the job well, but as has been said, a pain to program without the use of a PC/Laptop, I have no experience of the 3500, but having chatted with owners of the 3500, and had a good look at it, the one main thing that has me wanting one to replace my IC-r5 with the 3500 is the larger screen, much more usable for alphanumerics, as I also use a 9000xlt in the car, and the ability to have the frequency and an owner named alphanumeric has put the 3500 at the top of my list for when the time comes to make the change.

Thanks 48thEagle, I know what you mean about the screen size, Thats why i am leaning towards the 3500 that and as Mike.p said the pre programmed lists you can download. Thanks again for your thoughts, But as i said im going to upgrade my camera first (the old AOR1000's still going, it's just the size of it !). Cheer's. Skeggy.
