Hi. I am programming my Yaesu VR-120D in readyness for the RIAT next weekend and have found a feature called a 'front end attenuator' which can be switched on or off. Could someone tell me what it is and what it does and the benefits if any of using it. I appreciate any input.

If on it will 'attenuate' ie. reduce a strong signal. Useful if you are close to a transmitter or when using an external aerial. If it can be switched on per channel then it can be very useful when out and about..if like most scanners it is globally on or off then of little use really as it will attenuate weak signals too.

A strong signal, from a close by transmitter, can cut accross a weaker channel you are trying to listen to, by the nature of it's strength and proximity.

A strong signal will bleed over onto adjacent channels on your cheap scanner. It will also cause serious unpredictable intermodulation products - that is the strong signal will become mixed with other signals and be audible on several other frequencies making 'scanning' and 'searching' almost impossible.

Thanks again. Sorry...bad choice of word and meant in a general sense not to insult your scanner or choice.
