Gents,

I was at Coningsby for two days this week, obviously to shoot the 493rd, but also keen to photograph some of the new Tranche 2's. I was lucky in that I caught several, including a very clean and completely unmarked ZJ950 - the latest I believe.

I didn't realise until I looked carefully at the pics that this aircraft has no IRST, or PIRATE on the nose, although a close examination of the pics shows some discolouration where this is normally fitted. My pics and others that I've seen of the other T2 jets all show it as standard, and it's obviously standard with the block 5's, either built to that standard or after upgrade when they come back from Warton. The obvious question, does anybody know why?

Cheers Kevin.

Its an FGR.4 Ive seen it during build, clearly the FLIR sensor head has been removed and ballast fitted.

As a matter of interest, why would that be done Neil?

An article I read a number of years ago mentioned that the Pirate is removable and can be taken out when it is not needed.

Most obvious would be robbed for spares for a more deserving jet.

Many reasons but mainly for another jet, I can imagine why its been removed but can't comment on here.

Never read that article, but you can only remove PIRATE if you have the ballast to replace it. Its not a small piece of kit, a two man lift to shift it.
