There are some really good cars out there. Usually something Japanese if you can get it...make sure there's a good MOT on it though, but if there is, it shouldn't give you any trouble. Another one is a Proton. I had one until 2005. It was 1 owner, 37k, a four door saloon with Mitsubishi mechanicals and it cost me £400!! Not the most exciting car on the road, but very reliable!

Why not just get an AutoTrader and have a look in that?

Go for a good little Ford fiesta the 1.3 are very reliable and good on petrol, cheap tax and insurance is cheap also. i own a 1999 model used for going to work a round trip of 100 miles . car as gone round the clock twice and sitting on 11000 so two hundred and 11 thousand miles . change the oil twice a year , its had one new drive belt , and a 2 sets of front discs . discs are £32 a set about 6 sets of brake pads allround all very cheap and easy to change . back brake system as been overhauled once. a few exhaust pipes over the years anda set of £4 anti roll bar bush set , a load of tyres over the years. still got the original battery on it. and it does about 50mpg, and runs sweet as a nut.paid £3200 for it in 2001 off the father in law.worth about £500 today but it still looks very good and does a very good job of getting me to work .why change it. i do own a few motobikes and a few other cars, but the Fiesta as been a cracking car . plenty on the market and going for your price range. quick pic of a few of my old nails.
