just been looking at my canon 400d and cant find a video camera mode, does it have 1 that you know of?

No, it doesn't have a video mode, the only Canon to have that is the 5D Mk 2

ok well if i had a video cam could i hook it upto my laptop so all the footage would be stored on the hard drive?

Not quite - The new EOS 500D also has full HD video capability at a fifth of the price.
