Most likely the information code. you get your freq for the automated weather and airfeild information usually has a code for the pilot to report so the controller knows they have the right altimeter settings and runway info etc. just uses the phonetic alphabet starting at ALPHA ending in ZULU everytime there is a change the letter changes. Once you get to zulu it goes back to alpha.

hope that helps.

The RAF miss out the letter codes I and O as they can be confused with 1 and 0.

:scratch: Really, I never knew this, seems strange since it is phonetic and you listen to it so I and O would be India and Oscar I don't see how it could be mixed up but i don't live near any Mil bases to argue against it heh.

G = Golf
H = Hotel
I = India
J = Juliet (Joo-lee-ett
K = Kilo (Kee-Low)
L = Lima (Lee-mah)
M = Mike
N = November
O = Oscar
P = Papa (Pah Pah)
Q = Quebec
R= Romeo

5 (fiver)
6
7
8
9 (niner)
0 (zero)

- = dash
/ = oblique
. point

Example
"Hello Zero this is Bravo 3 Delta awaiting delivery of engine part 4 3 oblique 4 7 point 5 at grid ref November Golf 4 Niner Zero Zero, Over"
"Hello 0 this is B3D awaiting deliver of engine part 43/47.5 at grid ref NG4900,Over".

The comment about I and O the military generally put a slash through O to visually depict a 0 and the number 1 is drawn as 1 not an I or like this l as most trainers would tell you the number 1 has a slanted cap and an I has a straight cap and never use lower case L's Big Grin .

As taught by the Royal Corps of signals, School of signals, Communication training in the RN,RM,RAF and RFA.
