A strange thing today...2-15pm there was such a howling noise...bit like a F15 but not quite...and to my surprise a Tornado Gr? appeared from the East heading towards Coningsby in a slight descending turn...making a real raucous howl... that I don't recall hearing before.??.. Heard/seen passing Gunby, E.Lincs.
..any thoughts.??
Clive.

It is both the recent tornado gr4s with 41sqn ,There is something t shaped like an antenna under the back end near the engines,I think this is making them howl.I have posted a photo of it on my web site in may 2009.
My site is http://milky01.piczo.com
Cheers Kevin.

Thank you for the update on this and link to the other thread....it's certainly an interesting sound.!!
How I remember during my school days the Hunters doing low level race track sweeps....howling their way back and fore over the Grammar hall in Spilsby...as I sat doing exams...perhaps more attention should have been paid to the papers..but then I just didn't want to go to this or that Uni...I just wanted to watch aeroplanes....still do
Thanks, Clive..

That antenna is part of the new comms fit that allows the crew to talk to troops on the ground, primarily for Afghanistan. Neil

Milky Yes work has started on 915, they have a few long months ahead. Vulcan558 This mod has been around for a while, saw the first Jet with it at Warton 2 years ago and quite a few in service jets are now equipped. So if it is the antenna that causes the howl, surprised its not been heard before now. Neil

ZA559 has been flying with the new Terma AIIRCM pod on the LH outboard pylon. The system is packed into an old BOZ-107 pod but it now has some vents on the side which BOZ never had. I wonder if the airflow over the vents at speed is the cause of the howl. Neil

Gr4 howled past this morning...passing just South of Gunby at 10-38am..heading Coningsby... I had just been telling my work colleague who was just back from holiday about the howling....and right on cue there was the sound demo..
Sentinel also noted on Coningsby approach... passing Gunby 11-40am

Not the aerial then,Back to the drawing board.
I have put a shot of the TERMA AIIRCM POD on ZA559 showing the vents on my web page.

I would agree with the airflow over the vents causing the sound...much like the sound of P51s with the guns taken out (make a whistling sound as the air goes through the empty holes....)

Hawker Hunter famous blue note is due to gun barrel holes , just like blowing over a empty bottle effect .looking at that pod it does have what looks like a hole and tube like look to it.?

I hadn't heard the howl for a few weeks....but then at lunchtime today a gentle howl was noted passing Gunby for Coningsby....and then this afternoon a very loud howling...passing just North of Gunby towards Coningsby..I did look at my watch but had too much work in my head at the time to recall what time it was now ...between 4-30 and 5pm though...

If the GR4 ever returns to the airshow circuit (Role Demo/Solo) it will be an added attraction. Imagine a GR4 carrying two of those pods and streaking low level down the display line!?
