the fog's been hanging around all day. you would of thought with todays tech they could of seen it coming and not bothered taking off

How would they get the job done without taking-off?
It's not uncommon to get airborne knowing there's a high chance that you'll be diverting elsewhere at the end, but if it gets the job done....
