Hi Phartycr0c,
They have not started practising yet. Im not 100% sure but i believe they will be starting on Monday 16th March. Last year they started on Monday 17th March (it still states this on the RAF Coningsby website) so it seems to make sense to start on 16th this year. Obviously the pilot will be starting quite high for a week or two, until he has completed his work up phase. The time slots for the practise displays will be 0800-0830 and 1300-1330. Obviously they wont be practising at both these times, 5 days a week, but if there are practise displays, they will be within these time slots.
I have a great view of the displays :P because i live down a small lane near crash gate 4 so the practises are right over the house. Im so lucky :) .
I must point out aswell that there is due to be a red arrows display at coningsby on Monday 16th March at 15.25 UTC Cheers . This is definetly worth going for.

Hope this Helps

James

Rhino,
The slots will cover Mon-Fri. It really is hit or miss if every slot is used. Last year some of the practice slots took place over the East Coast ranges and other local airfields.

This was last years info

http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafconingsby/flyinginfo/

'Beginning on Monday 17 March 2008, the Typhoon Display aircraft will be practicing for the forthcoming display season. Typhoon flying practice may take place over the airfield on weekdays, (Monday to Friday) within the following time slots: 0800 - 0830hrs and 1300 - 1330hrs. These times have been chosen to minimize noise disturbance to the local schools during lesson and exam times.

Daily display flying practice will then be reduced from approximately the beginning of May 2008 when the Pilot will have completed his work up phase.'

Yes its like TEEJ says, its just hit and miss. I remember last year the display would get me out of bed 2 or 3 times a week, practising in the 0800-0830 slot. Not sure how much of the 1300-1330 slot was used as i would be at work then, but i would say around 2 or 3 times per week. Its all random im affraid.

I dont know if they change each year but last year the display typhoon callsign was "typhoon 45". So if you have a scanner and you hear this, get there as quick as possible before he takes off. :) However they may use a different callsign this year so maybe its best to wait and see.

At 6.05pm tonight I was at work at Laceby. I heard a noise that could only be a Typhoon. I popped out onto the forecourt and watched what looked like a display practise. Couldn't believe my eyes. Nice clear skies and a phoon playing! 8)
He was doing verticals, twists and after burners!!! It lasted about 5 mins and was seriously amazing to watch at night.
I promise you, I'm not going mad. I saw it! Sounded fantastic too! :)

Thanks Coningsby for cheering me up after almost 11 hours at work. Just what I needed.

I was at work today in Kings Lynn and there was a typhoon doing high energy manouvers above where i work, this went on for a while loads of afterburner and loads of noise lol... wish i had seen it but i was teaching!!!
I received this email aswell.

Hi Matty,
did you see the flying display by the Typhoon just after 3pm this afternoon?
(Tuesday 11th) - it was to the North of town and went on for at least 10
minutes. There was every kind of maneuvre, including loops, rolls, dives &
vertical climbs with lots of afterburner flame & noise. Fantastic!

Thank you for the info Mark...I thought that was what I was hearing...

It was so still and quiet at work today in the gardens...hence it was not so hard to detect the distant sounds...it's still amazing just how far the sound travels....

It has been suggested though that it could be selective tuning of my ears...if mother asks a question I often fail to hear..!! Shocked ;)
