One for the locals maybe. I am aware of the small road running west off of the road linking Wittering villiage with the A47. This appears on Google earth to go right up to the perimeter fence by the southern taxiway at around the runway mid point. Though I live miles away, when visiting local relatives recently, I had a quick recce on a Sunday only to see the road is marked as private - no access. On the Thunder & Lightning viewing guide, the author suggests access may be tolerated on foot & I'm sure a couple of years back I saw a posting somewhere of shots taken from this point. Can anybody shed any light on this spot for me, as we will be visiting the aforementioned relatives again sometime soon and this could be an alternative for me if Cottesmore is quiet or on runway 04. Also any knowledge of the fence height would be good.

Many thanks.

Hi Malcom,

All the area's around RAF Wittering are below the fence line so all you see is canopys if your lucky.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your input. It would appear from another reply I had, that we are no longer tolerated down this lane, as it is single track only & previously those inconsiderates among us have blocked it with cars and generally not lived up to the owners expectations, hence the signs which I will obviously respect. I knew Wittering was not photographer friendly, so have never bothered with it but just hoped it was better than my last visit sometime in the 1970s to shoot USAF A-7s!
Regards
Malcolm

Is that the bendy farm-track that had a sign saying something like "No Entry, dangerous diseases" and if you kept going then you had a wonderful view of all the Harriers and A-7s".(The track is on the south-side) ????

Don't know about the sign or have any memory of that day way back when, as I've never been back since, what with there being better airfields nearby, but I have some very average shots of the A-7s taxiing in from a location very close to the southern taxiway. Also the fence must have been low then, unless I shot through it. The track I refer to in my original post is on the southside and puts you next to the southern taxiway just past the runway midpoint if the harriers are landing from the East, possibly runway 25 or 26?, though if you kept going you would be getting further away from the ramp area by the hangers. Maybe there were other tracks in days gone by but my memories & knowledge of Wittering have never been good.

You used to be able to use the track but, as said earlier, people's inappropriate parking put the track out of bounds. I remember sitting down there for the 1990 Battle of Britain Practise flypast and getting some cracking photos of base and visiting aircraft.
