This time no active airfieldvisit during my summerholiday but that didn't spoil the fun. This museum is located at former US Army airfield Oberschleissheim just north of Munich.

Lovely stuff there! The first one looks like a Typhoon (well, a little bit!) What exactly is that? Yes, I know it's an X31, but what was its remit? Cheers!

The X-31 was a joint German / US Government sponsored project to investigate high angle of attack (high alpha), post-stall (when a plane fall out the sky due to lack of lift) and thrust vectoring. The airframe was built by Rockwell in the USA and the carbon fiber wings in Germany by MBB, first flight was 11th October 1990, at Edwards AFB. Two aircraft were built, one of which crashed. By all accounts the project was a success with the aircraft performing well and generating lots of good data. Although the benefit of such slow speed, high alpha manoeurves is questionable for fighter tactics it made for a great airshow performance with the jet virtually hovering tail first. Lots more info on the net just type Rockwell X-31
