ZJ950 was moved from the spray shop into 29Sqn hanger in full 1435 flight marks but uncoded.

Cheers Kevin.

Cheers Kevin. Did you get a pic?

Presumably the markings on ZJ950 look a bit like this:

So if correct, leaves ZJ944 and ZJ949 to be allocated to squadrons perhaps. Also, perhaps
QO-F and QO-J will receive squadron marks...

Maybe. They've got to get some jets from somewhere, sometime. There are the 3 named plus one or two others maybe (the spares recovery airframes ZJ940 and ZJ948?). I can't see 17 sqn hanging on to six jets so they could give up at least two making 5/6 machines earmarked for 6 sqn. All speculation really - it's not like they're about to become an active flying squadron for a while yet as I understand it. 11 sqn might receive something new. Don't think they've received a jet since the F2 ZJ929 DL (and they lost DK). With squadrons pooling aircraft it probably doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. As always, we'll see in the fullness of time...

Well there is always new build. T2 consists of 67 aircraft I believe, with only 11 delivered so far still plenty for 6 Sqn.

Here's an interesting thought. We know that 1435 Flt require four aircraft, and that serials are being offered as to which aircraft will being going South. But usually on a long tanker trail more aircraft, say six, are prepared in order to allow the required number, four, to make the journey. One would assum that the planning for tanker and ground support could not be wasted if one of the Typhoons has a ground failure or mid air problem requiring a return to Coningsby.

Apart from painting the new squadron badge are the 1435 Flt aircraft modified in any other way for their long range flight and the air defence role required on the Falklands ?

Neil said that 3 sqn are doing the trail for 1435 flight.

The flight's aircraft are 'modified' in the sense that they are FGR4's without the PIRATE sensor, unlike their squadron counterparts.

The flight's aircraft are 'modified' in the sense that they have the PIRATE sensor removed.

I think that if you were to look on the recent photos thread you would find 2/3 Typhoons on
their first flights from Warton have not been fitted with PIRATE, Mickey Stix & Repoman would
comfirm this.

Very true, simply because there aren't enough to go around. Thats why the Luftwaffe have only just started fitting them to their post R2 jets.

I'm fully aware of this (although the Saudi jets have it), and presumably it's no co-incidence that these recent debutants (eg ZK300, ZK301 etc...) are earmarked for 1435 flight. It seems reasonable to assume that the jets for the flight don't have the PIRATE sensor because they don't need it operationally. I thinks it's also reasonable to suggest that if the aircraft destined for the Falklands required this fit, then 4 existing/operational (and not new) FGR4's would be assigned.

Actually no it doesn't, as I stated they simply don't have it because there aren't enough to go around. Nothing to do with the FI. As to the Saudis having them, well money talks.

Right, fair enough. It's an availability thing and not a strategic thing then. Maybe I wasn't quite cynical enough! I presumed that if they needed jets with the sensor they'd just take them from the stock they have. Thanks for straightening it out.
Cheers

I sometimes forget if a certain Typhoon has flown before. Today Thursday 3.9.09 Tarnish 17 flew ZK 302 out on a sortie from Warton it was in its primer paint, Im sure Mickey Stix will be posting a pic tonight
on Recent Photos. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for info. Got to be painted grey before delivery to Coningsby I guess.

Also noticed, from looking at your post on the Warton logs page - 29 sqn's ZJ910 BV almost took to the skies from Warton today after a long stay for upgrade, but aborted take-off with an engine problem.
